The fiberglass variety tends to be a bit more fire resistant than the composition.


Within the two different kinds of asphalt roof shingles, there are four different varieties. They are strip shingles, laminated shingles, interlocking shingles, and large individual shingles. Each of these varieties has a different kind of usage. For instance, the interlocking shingles tend to be used in high wind areas. While the strip shingles are the most conventional and widely used. Each of these types of shingles can be purchased for use on any kind of home, but some of them have more specific kinds of usage.


Once the kind of shingle is selected, there are still more choices when it comes to color, shape, and other kinds of varieties. Most home owners prefer premium shingles because they last longer, but there is also a standard shingle which is less expensive.

Overall, the asphalt roof shingles are the most common variety of shingles. They are going to be easy to find, less expensive up front, and will have plenty of options for home owners. They are also easier to install.

I had no idea shingles were made from so many different materials! I always thought it was just asphalt and various fillers like sand. many of the new materials (man made) are lighter and even help insulate better (I did more research past this page but wanted to come back and comment), you opened my eyes thats for sure!
